INDUSTRIAL LOVE.
In this series, I show the problem with industry and technology trying to
harness our natural world into power (wind, water, coal). Here, were see in
every shot a couple in a very cliche, 1950s-styled, iconic date= picnic, kite
flying, and building sandcastles. Equally, in every shot there is an excessive
amount of industry looming in the background; unrecognized by the couple.
This strong juxtaposition between the coldly happy couple and the incredible
technology creates a satire on several issues. I'm commenting on how our
dependence on various energy sources (even “green” energy- windpower)
have destroyed our landscape. In grouping a romantic couple with industry,
I'm remarking on how as Americans we LOVE technology and are entirely
dependent. The couple is the physical embodiment of our desire and
allegiance to these energies. By showing the couple on a "date," it's as we
jump from energy source to another, trying out each. One article says that wind
power is the future; in another it says it is volatile and unreliable. With each
energy source there are benefits and equally there are hazards. In the end,
we're ruining the resources we're harnessing by clogging the wind with turbines;
blocking the sea with smokestacks; and running power lines over natural
surfaces. |
